The Arno River Basin Authority carries out planning and programming activities on land protection and water resources management in the Arno River Basin. The Arno is  the  main river in Tuscany. The Arno River Basin Authority drafts and updates the following plans: 

  • Hydraulic Hazard Plan: the plan defines specific structural and non-structural actions to be carried out  to reduce flood risk  in the river basin.
  • Land Protection Plan: it outlines a programming and planning framework to manage and  minimize hydraulic and geological hazards taking into consideration economic and social development in the area.
  • Water Balance Plan: it is a technical plan for the management of water resources that contains information on  how much water is available for the different uses.
  • Water Quality Plan: it defines the actions to be carried out to reach and maintain water quality and to protect and manage surface waters.
  • Dredging Activities Plan: the plan rules the extraction of materials such as sand and gravel from the river bed i.e both from the  alluvial plain and the natural flooding areas.
  • The River Basin Management Plan:  in accordance with the requirements of the Water Framework Directiv the plan has the main aim of defining a Programme of Measures to reach “good status” of all water bodies by 2015. (see the section on European Directives).
