Flood Directive 2007/60/EC for the assessment and management of flood risk regarding all water courses and coast lines entered into force at the end of 2007.

The Directive requires Member States to map the flood extent, humans and assets at risk in the areas with the main aim of reducing the eventual damage to human health, the environment, cultural heritage and economic activity in the areas.

The Directive defines three milestones to be achieved by 2014:

  • By 2011 Member States had to carry out the preliminary flood risk analysis to The first of them is the identification of areas at potential flood risk .
  • By 2013 develop flood hazard and flood risk maps
  • By 2015 draft flood risk management plans. The Flood Management Plan will include measured to reduce the probability of flooding and its potential consequences. It will be focussed on prevention, protection and preparedness.

The management cycle has to be updated every six years and coordinated with the River Basin Management Plan.
